It seems like the music industry has changed more in the past decade than it
has in the past century.  Just as MTV and the music video changed the
business in the 80's, digital distribution (like iTunes) has changed the music
landscape in a big way.  As physical sales of CDs fall, the number of
downloads (songs and ringtones) continue to rise.  We may be on the cusp of
a new distribution paradigm; where artists release a single for download
every other month instead of an album every other year or longer.

Distribution is not the only aspect of the music business that is changing - the
art of making music is undergoing a renaissance.  Computer based
recording, online collaboration, digital distribution, and web-based promotion
are amazing developments for independent artists, songwriters, musicians,
and producers.

From the comfort of your home (studio) you can use various web sites to set
up a project, advertise for talent (musicians, singers, producers etc.), and with
some sites - have the talent you select record in real-time over the Internet
through tools that integrate with your favorite recording application.  Project
members can also work offline and transfer completed parts to password
protected folders the project owner maintains.  Budgets are determined up
front, and all fees are negotiated online.   From the talent's perspective; the
site may collect the negotiated fee for them and deposit it directly into their
Paypal account.  How cool is that?

Technicolor Troubadour utilizes the aforementioned tools, sites, and services
to collaborate with other songwriters, musicians, and  studios.  We've been
doing computer based recording for 20 years, and we want to share what
we've learned, and continue to learn about the many exciting developments
that are changing the way music is made, distributed, and promoted via the
web.  Thanks for stopping by!

What's New

We're working on a new Pro Audio section for folks who want to create
or expand their home studio.  We describe the hardware and software
components of the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and  include
sections for recording gear, a guitar specific section, and various
guides  - just go to our Pro Audio page or click on the following links:
Hardware (computers, audio & MIDI interfaces, controllers)
Software (audio production, virtual instruments & effects)
Gear (mics, mixers, monitors, processors, drums, keyboards)
Guitar (acoustic/electric, bass, MIDI, modeling, amps & effects)
Guides (buying, building, how-to)
We plan to offer a series of do-it-yourself guides (including videos) on
a variety of topics.  First up will be Video Production - everything you
need to create and distribute professional looking videos and
electronic press kits on a budget.
Work continues on our How-to knowledgebase, which covers all
aspects of computer based recording, online collaboration, digital
distribution, online promotion and various other topics to assist the
independent artist.  For now, you can visit a temporary page that
discusses the goals of the section and some basic information and
offers to get you started.
In the studio, we just completed the implementation of Vienna
Ensemble Pro for our distributed DAW environment.  Visit the Studio
page for more information.  You may also click here for hardware  and
here for software used in our studio.
We are excited to learn about the new Digital Musician site and the
Digital Music Container application developed by Charlie Steinberg
(yes, that Steinberg - Cubase, Nuendo etc.).  We've been a long time
user of digitalmusician.net, and we look forward to working with the
new site and the DM Container.
You can find streaming music and free downloads on our Music page.
The Links page has a lot of very useful destinations - more on the way!

Technicolor Troubadour is dedicated to music, technology, and the
intersection of the two.  Here you will find information about computer based
recording and online collaboration, and access to the essential products and
services an artist needs to record, mix, master, protect, publish, distribute,
and promote their material entirely on their own, or with nominal amount of
help from others - like us.

The site is the web presence for our project studio, publishing services, and
independent label.   We offer free mp3 downloads as well as an embedded
music players on our artist pages.

Obviously we identify with the troubadour; especially the part about strolling
around the countryside and singing songs.   We've simply traded the
countryside and restaurants for the Internet!  It gives you a bit more room to
wander around, singing songs of courtly love and rock and roll!

It is our goal to make this site a useful destination for independent artists that
want to make music on their own terms.   We would love to hear from you.
Tell us about the kind of information that would help you achieve your music
goals and we'll  do our best to include your suggestions on the appropriate
page on the site.

It's a great time to be making music; technology is moving at a blinding pace
so don't be left behind!  Thanks for stopping by.
